It was the occasion of our best friends' long awaited marriage. And it was also the occasion of meeting with old college friends. Recapturing the old memories gives a great delight, I experienced it for the first time. And when the old friends meet, many things happen. All friends danced and enjoyed a lot not only the marriage but the meeting also. Among other things, there were discussions also. And there was no limit of topics for discussion whether it may be drug addiction, gay or lesbian relationship, traditions and customs and lot more. But one of the topic that inspired me to write this article is " What is better? A JOINT family or a NUCLEAR family."
In the modern societies, the joint families are losing their existence and people are moving more and more towards nuclear family. There are many reasons that can be listed that most of the people consider themselves happy living in the nuclear families. Most of the young couples think there is no privacy in their life. They think the other members as an interruption in their privacy. The other reason of disintegrating the joint families into nuclear families that the people living in the villages and in towns are moving to cities for the jobs leaving their family occupation. Further, the people have lost patience and cannot bear a tiffle comment from the other family member. The other reason that can be stated for in favour of nuclear families is the coming of a bride from family having totally different values and morals. When she comes to the husband's family, she is unable to put up with the traditions and customs of the family. Also their are many restrictions on her as a bride while she is adapted to live a free life in her parents' house as a daughter.
Whatever may be the reason, but the nuclear families have their advantage as well as disadvantages. As for as the advantages are concerned, they are only few like no restrictions on the couple, can go to anywhere without anybody's permission, can use the household things, enjoy sexual life freely without any restrictions and so on.
If we look at the disadvantages, they are on a large scale. First is the famine of family traditions. The nuclear families, in the absence of elders are devoid of the society's culture, traditions and customs. The elders in the family are an essential part for their valuable experience and advice. They also provide a security to the family. The elders are more essentials for the younger members of the family. They can teach a lot to the children through the stories of animals, kings and queens. I still remember the time time I spent with my grandmother. I have learnt through a lot from her. It is not only through her but the other family members also. I have a previledge to live in a joint family having my grand-parents and paternal uncles. The time we live together was the time of marry making.
So I consider a JOINT FAMILY better. What do you consider better? It is up to you.
